CLASH OF CULTURES

EDUCATING THE FUTURE GENERATIONS

This course provides an introduction to Native American history and culture, with a focus on building greater sensitivity and understanding between Native and non-Native peoples. 


Drawing on the biography and writings of Kahnawake Mohawk leader Mike Mitchell, we will explore Indigenous perspectives, experiences, values and traditions. 


Topics will include early Indigenous life, European colonization, cultural clashes, Indigenous resistance, government policies, and efforts toward reconciliation. The course aims to foster thoughtful reflection and dialogue to promote improved relations.

Learners will discover what governments and other organizations have contributed towards reconciliation with Indigenous groups, as well as be encouraged to think independently and identify ways that they as individuals can contribute to reconciliation.
